The Rapture Study

Published on July 18, 2026 at 6:23β€―PM

This is one of those studies where we want to let Scripture build our theology rather than starting with a conclusion.

"Now Is the Day of Salvation"

Supporting verses:

  • 2 Corinthians 6:2 - "For he says, 'In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.' I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation."
  • Hebrews 9:27 - "Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment."

"Be Ready Today"

Supporting verses:

  • Matthew 24:42–44 - "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready; because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."
  • Matthew 25:13 - "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour."

What does "Rapture" mean?

The English word rapture isn't found in most English Bibles.

It comes from the Latin word rapiemur, used to translate the Greek word:

ἁρπΞ¬ζω (harpazō)

Meaning:

  • to seize
  • snatch away
  • catch up suddenly
  • take by force

Paul simply says believers will be caught up to meet Jesus.

Whether Christ gathers His Church before the Tribulation, during it, or after it...our calling remains the same.

What actually happens?

Paul gives the order.

Jesus descends

Not all the way to earth.

He comes into the clouds.

A loud command

This isn't secret.

Paul lists:

  • loud command
  • voice of the archangel
  • trumpet of God

This is a public, triumphant announcement.

Dead believers rise first

Every believer who has died receives a resurrected body.

Imagine:

Abraham...

Moses...

David...

Peter...

Paul...

your dad...

every believer throughout history.

Living believers are transformed

Those still alive are instantly changed.

1 Corinthians 15:51–53 (NIV)

51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—

52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

Together we meet Jesus

Notice something beautiful.

Nobody gets left behind because they died first.

Nobody gets priority because they're alive.

Everyone meets Christ together.

Where do we meet Him?

Paul is specific.

"...in the clouds...in the air."

This differs from passages describing Jesus returning to the Mount of Olives at His visible return to earth.

That distinction is one reason many believe the rapture and the Second Coming are separate events.

Jesus promised this

John 14:1–3 (NIV)

1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

2 My Father's house has many rooms...I am going there to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

Many see this as Jesus describing the gathering of His people to Himself.

Who is included?

Paul repeatedly says:

"the dead IN CHRIST"

and

"we who are alive."

The promise is for those who belong to Christ.

The great mystery

Paul calls this a mystery.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52

"Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be  hanged -  in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

A mystery in Scripture is something previously hidden but now revealed by God.

Is it imminent?

Many Christians believe Scripture teaches Christ could come at any moment.

Jesus repeatedly urged readiness.

Matthew 24:42 (NIV)

"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come."

Titus 2:13 (NIV)

"...while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ."

The big debate

This is where believers differ.

Pre-Tribulation

The Church is caught up before the Tribulation.

Often supported with:

  • Revelation 3:10
  • 1 Thessalonians 1:10
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Mid-Tribulation

The Church is caught up around the midpoint of Daniel's 70th week.

Pre-Wrath

The Church experiences part of the Tribulation but is removed before God's wrath is poured out.

Post-Tribulation

The Church remains through the Tribulation and is gathered to Christ as He returns in glory.

Why I Personally Lean Pre-Tribulation?

As I've studied Scripture, I've noticed several patterns that many pre-tribulation scholars point to:

  • God took Enoch before the Flood judgment (Genesis 5:24).
  • Noah was preserved through the Flood in the ark. (Genesis 6-8).
  • Lot was brought out of Sodom before judgment fell (Genesis 19).
  • Jesus promised to prepare a place for His followers (John 14:1–3).
  • The Church is not clearly mentioned during the central judgment sequences in Revelation chapters 6–18, though faithful interpreters differ on what that implies.

These observations have led me to lean toward a pre-tribulation understanding of the Rapture. This is where I currently lean, but I'm trying my best to follow Scripture - not win an argument. I recognize that sincere, Bible-believing Christians interpret these passages differently, and I respect those differences. Ultimately, Jesus is coming for His people - in His perfect timing!

Heart Check ❀️

Ask yourself:

  • Am I living as though Jesus could return today?
  • Am I encouraging others with this hope?
  • Is my confidence in Christ rather than in predicting dates?
  • Who in my life still needs to hear the gospel while there is time?

Key Takeaways

πŸ•ŠοΈ Jesus Himself will come for His people.

☁️ Living believers will be transformed instantly.

πŸ‘‘ We will meet the Lord in the air.

❀️ We will be with Him forever.
