JUDE — “SMELLS LIKE SMOKE”

⚓ Anchor: Jude 23

📖 CONTEXT
Jude writes urgently to believers because corrupt influences have “secretly slipped in” among them (Jude 4). His message isn't merely watch them—it's guard yourself, contend for the faith, and remain faithful to Christ.

⚔️ CONTEND — Jude 3

Jude 3 (NIV) - “Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.”

That word contend is stronger than simply believe.

The Greek is epagōnizomai—the idea of struggling earnestly, fighting for something, exerting yourself for it.

Jude isn't telling believers to become argumentative.

He's telling them:

Don't surrender what Christ entrusted to you.

“Contenders don't compromise. If we don't contend, we will compromise.”

And 2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV) fits perfectly: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Paul didn't say I won every argument.

He said:

I kept the faith.

That's biblical contending. ⚔️📖

“Contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.”

Contending isn't about winning arguments. It is holding firmly to the truth of Jesus and His gospel when compromise would be easier.

🌑 THE DANGER — Jude 4–16
Jude points to Israel's rebellion, fallen angels, Sodom and Gomorrah, Cain, Balaam and Korah as warnings.

Compromise rarely announces itself.
It creeps in. It becomes familiar. It grows in secrecy.

🔥 Not everything familiar is faithful.

Jude 4 (NIV) - “For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you…”

Notice that word:

secretly.

Which connects directly to another thing pastor said:

“Compromise is gradual & subtle. It grows well in secrecy.”

🔥 That's worth sitting with.

Very few believers wake up one morning and decide:

Today I'm abandoning everything I believe.

Compromise usually happens by inches.

A conviction gets softened.

Something once avoided becomes tolerated.

Something tolerated becomes normalized.

Something normalized becomes defended.

And eventually we can become comfortable with something that once troubled our conscience.

That's why Jude says contend.

⚠️ “NOT EVERYTHING FAMILIAR IS FAITHFUL.”

Because Jude repeatedly reaches backward into familiar biblical history.

He mentions:

Jude 5 — Israel in the wilderness
They had experienced God's deliverance.

Jude 6 — rebellious angels
They abandoned their proper dwelling.

Jude 7 — Sodom and Gomorrah
They pursued corruption.

Jude 11 — Cain, Balaam and Korah
Three incredibly important examples of rebellion appearing in different forms.

Jude's argument isn't merely:

“Watch out for obviously evil things.”

Some dangers become dangerous precisely because they become familiar.

Something can sound Christian.

Look Christian.

Use Christian vocabulary.

Come from someone we've listened to for years.

And still need to be tested against Scripture.

📖 Familiarity is not the standard. God's Word is.

🪞 THE MIRROR — Jude 17–21
Jude was written to believers. Before looking around for compromise in others, look within.

Jude can very easily become a book where we start identifying everybody else's apostasy.

“That's describing them.”

“That church does this.”

“That teacher does that.”

“That person is compromising.”

But pastor asked the congregation to turn Jude around.

Rather than finishing Jude thinking:

“Who around me is compromising?”

the better questions become:

What am I contending for?
Where have I quietly compromised?
What have I tolerated because it became familiar?
What do I allow in secrecy that I wouldn't comfortably bring into the light?
Does my life actually bear fruit?
Am I strong enough in truth to approach someone struggling without being pulled into the same fire?
And when I encounter someone who doubts, do I respond with condemnation—or mercy?

1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV) - “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called…”

That ties beautifully to Jude 3 and 2 Timothy 4:7.

Fight the good fight → Contend.

Keep the faith → Don't compromise.

Show mercy → Reach toward the fire.

Remain faithful → Don't let the fire consume you.

🪞 What does Jude reveal about me?

That's especially appropriate because Jude isn't primarily writing an evangelistic tract to unbelievers.

Jude 1 (NIV) addresses: - “To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ…”

The warning enters the church because the danger has entered the church.

“But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith…”
— Jude 20

Ask: Where am I becoming comfortable with something that is pulling me away from Christ?

🌑 COMPROMISE AND DARKNESS

Jude describes the corrupt influences among them as:

Jude 12–13 (NIV)- “…shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars…”

Everything Jude describes has appearance without substance.

Clouds — but no rain.

Trees — but no fruit.

Stars — but no direction.

Shepherds — but serving themselves.

That gives another diagnostic question for the mirror:

Is my Christianity merely recognizable—or is it fruitful?

🔥 THE RESCUE — Jude 22–23

“Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire…”

Christians aren't called simply to avoid the fire. We're called to reach toward those in danger while refusing to become stained by what we're rescuing them from.

❤️ AND THEN JUDE CHANGES DIRECTION

This part matters enormously.

After spending most of the letter exposing corruption, Jude doesn't tell Christians to hide from everyone.

He tells them to strengthen themselves and then rescue others.

Jude 20–21 (NIV) - “But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”

Then:

Jude 22–23 (NIV) - “Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear…”

There it is.

🔥 Contend.
🙏 Build yourself up.
🕊️ Pray.
❤️ Show mercy.
🔥 Get close enough to rescue.
⚠️ Don't get close enough to compromise.

Someone who has been pulling people away from a fire might smell like smoke.

But Jude warns us not to become part of the fire ourselves.

🔥 SMOKE IS EVIDENCE OF PROXIMITY

What am I staying close enough to that its influence is beginning to cling to me?

And equally:

Am I staying close enough to Jesus that His truth is what people recognize on me?
