Be Holy Because He Is Holy

Passage: 1 Peter 1:13–25

Anchor Verses: 1 Peter 1:15–16

1 Peter 1:15–16

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

This section is Peter’s call to live differently because we belong to God.
He moves from hope in verses 3–12 to holy living in verses 13–25.

So the flow is:

  • Because your hope is alive → live with purpose
  • Because God is holy → pursue holiness
  • Because you were redeemed by Christ’s blood → do not go back to empty living
  • Because the Word of God endures forever → build your life on it

Big Theme of the Section

Peter is saying:

“Set your hope on Christ, prepare your mind, and live like people who truly belong to God.”

Holiness here is not just “looking religious.”
It means being set apart for God in your mind, desires, conduct, and love.

Verse-by-Verse Deep Dive

1 Peter 1:13 — Prepare Your Mind and Set Your Hope

“Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.”

Peter says therefore, meaning: because of all the living hope and future inheritance he just described, now live a certain way.

He gives three instructions:

“Minds that are alert”

This carries the idea of being ready, disciplined, gathered up inwardly.
Not mentally loose and careless.

“Fully sober”

This means spiritually clear-minded, self-controlled, watchful.

“Set your hope”

Their hope is to be fixed on the grace that will be fully revealed when Jesus returns.

Heart meaning:

Your mind and hope must be anchored in eternity, not tossed around by the spirit of the age.

1 Peter 1:14 — Do Not Go Back

“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.”

Before Christ, they lived in ignorance.
Now they know God, so they are not to be shaped by former desires.

This is a call to break with the old life.

Cross references:

  • Romans 12:2 — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
  • Ephesians 4:22–24 — "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off the old self and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

Heart meaning:

Salvation is not just forgiveness from the past; it is a break from the old pattern.

1 Peter 1:15–16 — Be Holy Because God Is Holy

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

This is the anchor.

Peter grounds holiness in God’s character.
We are not holy to impress people.
We pursue holiness because the One who called us is holy.

And notice:

“In all you do”

Not just church life.
Not just speech.
Not just appearance.
All you do.

Old Testament source:

  • Leviticus 11:44 - "I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground."
  • Leviticus 19:2 - "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy."
  • Leviticus 20:7 - "Consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am the Lord your God."

God has always called His people to reflect His character.

Heart meaning:

Holiness is not random rule-keeping. It is living in a way that reflects the God you belong to.

1 Peter 1:17 — Live in Reverent Fear

“Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.”

Peter balances intimacy and reverence.

God is Father, yes.
But He is also the impartial Judge.

Peter again reminds them they are foreigners — exiles, sojourners, not at home in this world.

Reverent fear does not mean:

  • terror of condemnation for the believer
  • a cowering dread

It does mean:

  • deep respect
  • serious awe
  • walking carefully before God

Cross references:

  • Proverbs 9:10 — “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding..."
  • Hebrews 12:28–29 — "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'"

Heart meaning:

Grace does not make us casual about God. It makes us more reverent.

1 Peter 1:18–19 — You Were Redeemed at a Great Cost

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”

This is one of the richest verses in the chapter.

Peter says they were redeemed — bought back, rescued, ransomed.

Not with:

  • silver
  • gold
  • earthly payment

But with:

the precious blood of Christ

And Peter uses Passover-like language:

“a lamb without blemish or defect”

Cross references:

  • Exodus 12:5 —  "The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats."  (Passover lamb without defect)
  • John 1:29 — "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
  • Ephesians 1:7 —  "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace..."

Heart meaning:

Holiness is not how we earn salvation.
Holiness is how redeemed people respond to the price Jesus paid.

1 Peter 1:20–21 — Christ Was Revealed for Your Sake

“He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

This is beautiful and prophecy-rich.

Jesus was not an afterthought.
The cross was not Plan B.

Christ was known before the foundation of the world and revealed in these last times.

Then Peter says:

“Through him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him,”

And:

“and so your faith and hope are in God.”

Heart meaning:

Your salvation is rooted in God’s eternal plan, not human accident.

1 Peter 1:22 — Love One Another Deeply

“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other,  love one another deeply, from the heart.”

Peter moves from holiness toward love.

True holiness does not become cold, proud, or harsh.
It produces sincere love.

Notice the progression:

  • obeying the truth
  • purified lives
  • sincere love
  • deep love from the heart

Cross references:

  • John 13:34–35 — "A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
  • 1 John 3:18 — "Dear children, let us not love with words of speech but with actions and in truth."

Heart meaning:

A holy life is not merely separated from sin; it is also devoted to loving God’s people sincerely.

1 Peter 1:23 — Born Again Through the Word

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”

Back in 1 Peter 1:3, Peter said believers were born again into a living hope.
Now he explains one of the means God uses: the Word of God.

Not perishable seed — imperishable seed.

The Word is living, enduring, life-giving.

Cross references:

  • James 1:18 — "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all He created."                   He gave us birth through the word of truth
  • Hebrews 4:12 — "The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."  God's Word is active and alive.

Heart meaning:

If God’s Word gave you life, then God’s Word must also shape your life.

1 Peter 1:24–25 — Flesh Fades, the Word Remains

“For all people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

Peter quotes Isaiah 40:6–8 - "A voice says, 'Cry out.' And I said, 'What shall I cry?' 'All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.'"

Human life is fragile.
Human beauty fades.
Human strength fades.
Human systems fade.

But the Word of God endures forever.

Then Peter closes:

“And this is the word that was preached to you.”

Cross references:

  • Isaiah 40:8 — “The word of our God endures forever.”
  • Matthew 24:35 — “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

Heart meaning:

If everything around you feels unstable, the Word of God is not.

Main Lessons of 1 Peter 1:13–25

Hope and holiness belong together

Peter does not separate future hope from present obedience.

  • 1 Peter 1:13 — Set your hope on Christ’s coming
  • 1 Peter 1:15–16 — Be holy in all you do

Holiness is rooted in God’s nature

We pursue holiness because He is holy.

Redemption should change how we live

  • 1 Peter 1:18–19 — Christ’s blood purchased us

We should not treat lightly what cost Jesus so much.

Holiness includes love

  • 1 Peter 1:22 — Love one another deeply

The Word is enduring and life-giving

  • 1 Peter 1:23–25 — God’s Word outlasts everything else

Prophecy Connection

This section still has Peter’s forward-looking tone.

1 Peter 1:13

He tells believers to set their hope on the grace to be brought when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 1:20

Christ was revealed in these last times.

Peter wants believers to live holy lives because history is moving somewhere.
Jesus is coming, and that future should shape present conduct.

Big prophecy takeaway:

Bible prophecy is not meant to make us merely curious — it is meant to make us holy, sober, and steadfast.

  • Do I see holiness as a burden, or as the beauty of belonging to God?
  • Am I living with reverent fear before the Lord?
  • Do I remember that I was redeemed by the precious blood of Christ?
  • Is my love for other believers sincere and from the heart?
  • Am I building my life on what fades, or on the Word that endures forever?
