This passage contains one of the Bible's most beautiful reversals.
Ships lower an anchor into the depths to keep them from drifting.
Believers lift their anchor into the heights.
Our hope isn't buried in the earth.
It is fastened to Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, who has already entered the Father's presence on our behalf.
That is why the anchor is "firm and secure." It doesn't depend on how tightly we hold on to Him—it depends on where He is holding us.
“People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

This anchor goes upward.
Instead of sinking into the ocean...
our hope reaches into Heaven itself.
Our anchor is fastened where Christ is.

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain."
Setting the Scene
The writer has just reminded believers of God's promise to Abraham.
God didn't merely make a promise.
He swore an oath.
Why?
Not because God can lie...
But because He wanted us to understand just how absolutely trustworthy He is.
Hebrews 6:17–18

"Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that...we...may be greatly encouraged."
Notice the wording.
Unchanging nature.
God's plans don't fluctuate.
His promises don't expire.
His character doesn't evolve.
If He says something...
it is already as certain as history.
Verse 19
"We have this hope..."
Biblical hope is not optimism.
It isn't wishful thinking.
It isn't:
"I hope things work out."
Biblical hope means
confident expectation because God has spoken.
"...an anchor..."
Anchors don't remove storms.
They keep ships from drifting.
That alone is a beautiful picture.
Jesus never promised calm seas.
He promised Himself.
"...for the soul..."
Notice what receives the anchor.
Not your body.
Not your finances.
Not your circumstances.
Your soul.
Your deepest self.
Everything around us may move...
our soul doesn't have to.
"...firm and secure."
Two powerful descriptions.
Firm
- Stable
- Immovable
- Dependable
Secure
- Safe
- Unable to fail
- Certain
The world's anchors fail.
Money fails.
Health fails.
Governments fail.
People fail.
Christ never does.
"...It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain."
This is the verse that often gets overlooked.
To understand it...
we have to go into the Temple.
The Curtain
Inside the Tabernacle—and later the Temple—was a thick veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Holy of Holies).
Only the high priest could enter.
Only once each year.
Only with blood.

That curtain represented the separation between sinful humanity and God's holy presence.
Then Jesus died.

"...the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom."
God opened the way.

The word forerunner is wonderful.
A forerunner goes ahead...
so others can follow.
Jesus didn't merely enter Heaven.
He entered for us.
He's preparing the way.
Exactly what He promised: John 14:2–3 (NIV) "I am going there to prepare a place for you...I will come back and take you to be with me..."
The Anchor and Bible Prophecy
Our anchor isn't attached to this world.
Not to governments.
Not to economies.
Not to peace treaties.
Not even to our own strength.
It is attached to the risen Christ seated at the Father's right hand.
That's why believers can watch prophecy unfold without panic.
Our hope isn't in correctly predicting every event.
Our hope is anchored in the One who already stands beyond the end of history.
