Deep Dive: The Trinity

Anchor Verse — Matthew 28:19

Matthew 28:19 — “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Notice Jesus says “in the name”—singular—not “in the names.” Yet He identifies the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

This gives us the biblical foundation:

There is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Each Person is fully God.
Each Person is distinct.
Yet God is one.

1. Scripture Teaches There Is Only One God

The Trinity does not mean Christians believe in three gods.

Deuteronomy 6:4 — “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Isaiah 45:5 — “I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.”

1 Corinthians 8:4 — “There is no God but one.”

The Bible never abandons monotheism. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three separate beings competing with one another. They share the one divine nature.

2. The Father Is God

This is stated plainly throughout Scripture.

1 Corinthians 8:6 — “For us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live.”

Ephesians 4:6 — “One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

The Father sends the Son, loves the Son, speaks from heaven, and sends the Holy Spirit. He is not the Son or the Spirit, but He is fully God.

3. The Son Is God

Jesus is not merely a prophet, angel, teacher, or created being. Scripture identifies Him as God.

John 1:1 — “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The Word was with God, showing distinction, and the Word was God, showing deity.

John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

The eternal Word became Jesus Christ.

John 20:28 — Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus did not correct Thomas. He received his confession.

Colossians 2:9 — “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”

Hebrews 1:8 — Speaking of the Son: “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever.”

Jesus is fully God, yet He is distinct from the Father.

4. The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit is not merely a force, feeling, energy, or symbol. He is a divine Person.

Acts 5:3–4 — Peter tells Ananias that he lied to the Holy Spirit, then says, “You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

Lying to the Holy Spirit is described as lying to God.

The Holy Spirit also performs actions belonging to a personal being:

• He teaches — John 14:26
• He speaks — Acts 13:2
• He guides — John 16:13
• He intercedes — Romans 8:26
• He can be grieved — Ephesians 4:30
• He distributes spiritual gifts — 1 Corinthians 12:11

A force cannot be grieved, speak, teach, choose, or intercede. The Holy Spirit is personal—and fully divine.

The Trinity Revealed at Jesus’ Baptism

One of the clearest pictures appears at the Jordan River.

Matthew 3:16–17 — Jesus comes out of the water, the Spirit of God descends like a dove, and the Father’s voice speaks from heaven: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

All three Persons appear simultaneously:

• The Son is standing in the water.
• The Holy Spirit descends upon Him.
• The Father speaks from heaven.

This matters because God is not simply one Person changing costumes or appearing in different modes. The Father, Son, and Spirit are present and relating to one another at the same moment.

Distinct Persons, Perfect Unity

The Father is not the Son.
The Son is not the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not the Father.

Yet they are not divided in essence, purpose, holiness, or glory.

Jesus prayed to the Father:

John 17:5 — “Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”

Jesus existed with the Father before creation. Their relationship did not begin when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

Jesus also speaks of the Spirit:

John 14:16–17 — Jesus says He will ask the Father, and the Father will give “another advocate,” the Spirit of truth.

Here we see:

• The Son asks.
• The Father sends.
• The Spirit comes.

Distinct Persons working in perfect unity.

The Trinity in Creation

The opening pages of Scripture already hint at God’s triune nature.

Genesis 1:1–2 — God creates the heavens and earth, and the Spirit of God hovers over the waters.

John 1:3 — Through the Word, “all things were made.”

Colossians 1:16 — All things were created through Christ and for Christ.

Creation is the work of the one God, involving the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Genesis 1:26 — “Let us make mankind in our image.”

This verse alone does not prove the entire doctrine, but viewed alongside the rest of Scripture, the plural language is deeply significant.

The Trinity in Salvation

Our salvation is thoroughly Trinitarian.

The Father plans and sends

John 3:16 — The Father loves the world and gives His Son.

Ephesians 1:3–5 — The Father chooses and adopts believers through Jesus Christ.

The Son accomplishes redemption

Ephesians 1:7 — “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus becomes flesh, lives without sin, dies for us, rises again, and intercedes for us.

The Spirit applies salvation

Titus 3:5–6 — God saves us through rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, poured out through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:13–14 — Believers are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.

The Father plans redemption.
The Son accomplishes redemption.
The Spirit applies redemption to believers.

One God. One salvation. Three Persons working inseparably.

The Trinity in the Christian Life

We come to the Father through the Son by the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:18 — “For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”

Prayer is Trinitarian:

• We pray to the Father.
• We come through the Son.
• We are helped by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:26 — The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us.

Hebrews 7:25 — Jesus lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him.

We are never approaching God alone. The Son and Spirit are actively involved in our relationship with the Father. ❤️

A Beautiful Trinitarian Blessing

2 Corinthians 13:14 — “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

• The grace of the Son
• The love of the Father
• The fellowship of the Spirit

The Trinity is not an abstract puzzle. It is the God who saves us, loves us, dwells within us, and brings us into fellowship with Himself.

What the Trinity Is Not

Not three gods

That would be tritheism. Scripture teaches one God.

Not one Person wearing three masks

That belief is often called modalism—the idea that God sometimes acts as Father, sometimes as Son, and sometimes as Spirit.

But Jesus speaks to the Father, the Father sends the Son, and the Spirit descends upon Jesus. They are truly distinct Persons.

Not one God divided into thirds

The Father is not one-third God. Jesus is not one-third God. The Spirit is not one-third God.

Each Person possesses the fullness of the divine nature.

Not a hierarchy of greater and lesser gods

Jesus willingly submitted to the Father during His earthly mission, but submission in role does not mean inferiority in nature.

Philippians 2:6–8 — Jesus, existing in the form of God, humbled Himself and became obedient to death.

His humility reveals His love, not a lack of deity.

Why the Trinity Matters

Without the Trinity:

• Jesus could not truly reveal the Father.
• The cross would not be God Himself coming to rescue us.
• The Holy Spirit would be reduced to an impersonal power.
• God’s eternal love would become difficult to understand.

But because God is triune, love existed before creation.

John 17:24 — Jesus says the Father loved Him “before the creation of the world.”

God did not create humanity because He was lonely. The Father, Son, and Spirit have eternally existed in perfect love and fellowship. God created us not out of need, but out of overflowing goodness.

The Deep Truth

We may not be able to fully comprehend how God is three Persons and one Being—but we can clearly understand what Scripture reveals.

Mystery does not mean contradiction.

The doctrine does not say:

God is one Person and three Persons.

It says:

God is one in essence and three in Person.

He is one what and three whos.
