Ecclesiastes 5:1–5 | ⚓ Verse 2

Let Your Words Be Few

There is a difference between coming to God freely and coming to God casually.

Ecclesiastes 5:1–5 calls us to remember Who is listening when we pray. We are invited to draw near to God—but to draw near with reverence: guarding our steps, listening before speaking, refusing careless words, and taking seriously the promises we make in His presence.

Ecclesiastes 5:2 gives us the posture:

“Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few.”

“Let your words be few” does not mean God does not want to hear our hearts. Psalm 62:8 tells us to pour out our hearts before Him, and Hebrews 4:16 invites us to approach His throne with confidence. The warning is not against many words—it is against careless, impulsive, empty words spoken without remembering the holiness of the One before us.

Solomon reminds us:

God is in heaven. We are on the earth.

That truth puts prayer back into its proper perspective. He is God; we are not. We do not need to impress Him, persuade Him with elaborate speech, or make emotional promises to prove our devotion. Sometimes the most reverent thing we can do in His presence is simply be still and listen.

And when we do speak, let our words be honest. Let our yes mean yes. Let the promises we make to God be promises we intend to keep.

Throughout Scripture, we repeatedly find this posture of holy quietness—from Moses removing his sandals before the burning bush (Exodus 3:4–5), to Elijah hearing the gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11–12), to the declaration of Habakkuk 2:20: “The LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”

Ecclesiastes 5 teaches us that silence before God is not emptiness.

It is reverence.

It is the quiet acknowledgment that He is God.

And sometimes, before we tell Him everything on our hearts, we simply need to sit before Him and remember:

God is in heaven.
I am on the earth.
He already knows.
So I can be still.
