🌿 When God's Mercy Challenges Our Hearts

📖 Scripture: Jonah 3:10–4:2, 4, 6–11
⚓ Anchor Verse: Jonah 4:4
“The LORD replied, ‘Is it right for you to be angry?’” — Jonah 4:4 (NIV)
What happens when God shows mercy to someone we believe deserves judgment?
The people of Nineveh repented, and God spared their city. It should have been a moment of celebration. Instead, Jonah was angry. He knew God was gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in love—but he struggled to accept those very qualities when they were extended to his enemies.
Through a plant, a worm, and a scorching wind, God exposed something deeper in Jonah's heart. Jonah mourned the loss of his own comfort while showing little concern for the thousands of lives God had spared.
And then God asked a question that still speaks to us today: Should I not have compassion on Nineveh? (Jonah 4:11)
In today's study, we'll explore God's mercy, the danger of misplaced priorities, the difference between righteous anger and selfish resentment, and the compassion God calls us to extend—even to those we struggle to love.
The book of Jonah ends without revealing Jonah's response. Perhaps that's because the question is meant to reach beyond Jonah and into our own hearts.
❤️ The Heart of This Study: God's mercy is not limited by our opinions of who deserves it. The grace we gratefully receive is the same grace we are called to celebrate when God extends it to others.
